Nortriptyline Oral Route Precautions
There aren’t any known interactions between Imitrex and vaccines. To find out what vaccines you may need, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. There have been no specific reports of vitamins interacting with Imitrex.
- If they do not, and this is a problem for you, go back to your doctor to see if there’s another medicine you can try.
- Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse (such as your feelings of sadness get worse, or you have thoughts of suicide).
- If you already have blood pressure that’s not well managed, taking Imitrex may raise it further.
- Those interactions can alter the metabolism or activity of the medication and/or alcohol metabolism, resulting in potentially serious medical consequences.
Relatively limited information is available, however, on medication interactions resulting from moderate alcohol consumption (i.e., one or two standard drinks1 per day). Researchers, physicians, and pharmacists must therefore infer potential medication interactions at moderate drinking levels based on observations made with heavy drinkers. In addition, moderate alcohol consumption may directly influence some of the disease states for which medications are taken (see sidebar, pp. 52–53, for further discussion of alcohol’s influences on various disease states). Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially people younger than 25) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts.
Medication Guide
For depression in adults, the dose is increased gradually to between 75mg and 100mg a day. It can be increased to a maximum dose of 150mg a day if a specialist prescribes it. Lower than usual dosages are recommended for elderly patients and adolescents. Lower dosages are also recommended for outpatients than for hospitalized patients who will be under close supervision.
- Trouble with the heart’s electricity can cause problems that affect your heartbeat.
- You may get on with people more easily because you are less anxious.
- It inhibits the activity of such diverse agents as histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and acetylcholine.
- Most of the remaining alcohol is then absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily the stomach and the upper small intestine.
The only effective treatment to date involves a substance called interferon-α, often in combination with an agent called ribavirin, and has a cure rate of approximately 40 percent. Heavy alcohol use in patients infected with hepatitis C accelerates the rate of liver damage and increases the risk of cirrhosis. Moreover, heavy alcohol use appears to reduce the number of hepatitis C-infected people who respond to treatment with interferon-α.
Adverse Reactions/Side Effects
Researchers do not yet know how alcohol consumption exacerbates disease progression and interferes with treatment. Nevertheless, people infected with the hepatitis C virus probably should avoid using alcohol, particularly during interferon-α treatment. Gluconeogenesis, which occurs in the liver, requires certain compounds whose levels are regulated by a substance called reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH).
They can help determine whether the combination may be safe for you. If you have had an allergic reaction to Imitrex or any of its ingredients, your doctor will likely not prescribe Imitrex. You can ask them about other treatments that may be better choices for you. Your doctor and pharmacist can help determine whether any of the medications you take are triptans or ergotamines. Imitrex works like other triptans and medications called ergotamines.
Mixing Pamelor With Alcohol: Side Effects, Interactions And Blackouts
To help prevent this happening, your doctor will probably recommend reducing your dose gradually over several weeks, or longer if you have been taking nortriptyline for a long time. Nortriptyline is not addictive but you can get withdrawal side effects if you stop taking it suddenly. You may have flu-like symptoms like feeling sick, muscle pain and feeling tired or restless.
- The risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity may be more likely when you start or increase the dose of these drugs.
- And the paperwork, sometimes called the medication guide or patient package insert, may contain details about interactions.
- Check with your doctor before using any of these medicines with nortriptyline.
- Children aged 6 to 17 years old can also take it for bedwetting but other medicines are used first which have less side effects.
It inhibits the activity of such diverse agents as histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and acetylcholine. It increases the pressor effect of norepinephrine but blocks the pressor response of phenethylamine. Studies suggest that Pamelor interferes with the transport, release, and storage of catecholamines. Operant conditioning techniques in rats and pigeons suggest that Pamelor has a combination of stimulant and depressant properties. It’s also important to read the Imitrex label and other paperwork that may come with the drug. The label may have colored stickers that mention an interaction.
Nortriptyline and Alcohol/Food Interactions
However, there is substantial evidence from placebo-controlled maintenance trials in adults with depression that the use of antidepressants can delay the recurrence of depression. Make sure your doctor knows if you have a heart disorder called Brugada syndrome. Brugada syndrome can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Call your doctor or the emergency department right away if you have a fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat, unexplained fainting, lightheadedness, or troubled breathing after using this medicine. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
The activities of these enzymes may vary from person to person, contributing to the observed variations in alcohol elimination rates among individuals (Martin et al. 1985). TCAs have been figuratively put under a microscope for decades due to their controversial, potentially dependent effects on those prescribed the drug. Do not take St John’s wort, the herbal remedy for depression, while you are being treated with nortriptyline. At least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of an MAOI intended to treat psychiatric disorders and initiation of therapy with Pamelor.
